Itinerary

Day 1

Taking off from Cairns Airport we head inland, to begin your outback adventure. The green terrain of the coast gives way to red earth and rolling savannah plains marked with termite mounds and eucalyptus trees. The first stop on this outback adventure is Chillagoe, famous for its limestone caves and historic mining ruins. There’s the option to take a ranger guided cave tour and time to stop at ‘Balancing Rock’ and the old Smelter.

From here, it’s on to Undara Station for the Undara Experience, an award winning, privately operated tourist attraction. Set in the Undara Volcanic National Park, around 700m above sea level, the countryside is very different to Cairns. The land is wide and flat, with the occasional knoll providing sweeping views for miles around. The air is dry and crisp. This afternoon you can choose to explore the nature trails, relax by the pool or book in the ‘Wildlife at Sunset Tour’ (optional extra) which commences at 5.30pm. This tour includes complimentary beer / champagne and delicious cheese and fruit platter, with amazing sunset views, as well as a visit to one of the tube’s to watch the daily emergence of thousands of tiny microbats.

Dinner can be purchased (extra cost) Fettler’s Iron Pot Bistro, where there’s evening campfire activities and storytelling. Your accommodation (twin share) is provided in a restored railway carriage. This is a unique experience unto itself. The carriages are surrounded by native landscaping and often visited by kangaroos, birds and butterflies. [Can upgrade to Pioneer Huts if preferred.]

Day 2

Undara Station provides a truly memorable way to start your day, with a Bush Breakfast at Ringers Camp (again this is an optional extra, which would need to be booked in advance). Enjoy billy tea brewed over an open fire, as well as fresh juice, cereals, bacon, eggs, pancakes, toast and more. Watch out for the kookaburras, they are keen to share. After breakfast it’s off to explore on a fully-guided Half Day Undara Lava Tube tour. The tour starts at 8am and you will be impressed with the commentary and the geography. The Undara lava tubes are believed to be the longest in the world. They formed after the Undara Volcano erupted about 190,000 years ago.

Enjoy lunch at Undara before we take off at 1.30pm to return to Cairns. This is another scenic flight. Highlights include passing over Queensland’s highest mountains, before cruising over the Coral Sea to Sudbury and Moore Reef, returning to Cairns with a fly over Green Island. We arrive into Cairns Airport around 2.40pm.

What Will I See?

As much as possible! The scenic flight takes in the very best of this colourful landscape, from the rich green rainforests, to the red savannah outback, to the blue of the Coral Sea. Photographers will be particularly happy. Our Cessna 337 uses the unique “Centre Line Thrust” and high wing, which means there aren’t any engines or wings blocking your stunning pictures.

The volcanic Undara landscape is ancient. The giant lava tubes are impressive. The outback people who run Undara Experience are knowledgeable and friendly, sharing stories and their hospitality. For an overnight adventure, this tour gives you a fascinating insight into one aspect of Australia’s outback.

What Does It Cost?

This tour costs $3,360 for 4 people ($840 per person), which includes the aforementioned itinerary, accommodation and pilot commentary. It does not include meals, beverages or souvenir items. This is perfect for small groups and families.
